What is Earwax?
Earwax, scientifically known as cerumen, is a yellowy-brown waxy substance that is made in the ear canal. It protects and lubricates the skin of the ear canal by trapping dirt and repelling water. Earwax also contains bacteria-killing chemicals.
Earwax is made by cells in the outer part of your ear canal. These cells make earwax all the time, but it only comes out of your ear when you move it around in there. If earwax stays in your ear for a long time, it can start to clog up the ear canal and cause problems.
The main symptom of blockage is that it feels uncomfortable or painful to put anything into your ear – such as a cotton bud, hearing aid or headphone. Earwax may also be blocking your ears if you hear a hissing sound when you swallow or yawn, have an ache or pressure in your ear, are having trouble hearing properly, have tinnitus (a continuous high-pitched ringing noise), feel dizzy or generally unwell.
