What are Piles and What are the Symptoms?

Haemorrhoids, also known as piles, are swellings containing enlarged blood vessels found inside or around the bottom

In many cases, haemorrhoids don’t cause symptoms and some people don’t even realise they have them.

But when symptoms do occur, they may include:

•Itchiness, soreness and/or inflammation around the anus •

Bleeding when passing stool (the blood will be bright red) •

Mucous discharge after passing stool •

Discomfort or pain when going to the loo •

Feeling like the bowels need to be emptied even after going to the toilet •

A bulging or lumpy feeling just inside the back passage •

A hard lump(s) protruding from the bottom •

Occasional sharp pains up the bottom A dragging sensation in the back passage.

What you should do if you have piles

Lifestyle changes may help to reduce the strain on the blood vessels around the anus, such as gradually increasing the amount of fibre in the diet, drinking plenty of fluid, and avoiding or cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, losing weight, if overweight and also exercising regularly.

  • drink lots of fluid and eat plenty of fibre to keep your poo soft

  • wipe your bottom with damp toilet paper

  • take paracetamol if piles hurt

  • take a warm bath to ease itching and pain

  • use an ice pack wrapped in a towel to ease discomfort

  • gently push a pile back inside

  • keep your bottom clean and dry

  • exercise regularly

  • cut down on alcohol and caffeine (like tea, coffee and cola) to avoid constipation

What You should not do when you have Piles

  • do not wipe your bottom too hard after you poo

  • do not ignore the urge to poo

  • do not push too hard when pooing

  • do not take painkillers that contain codeine, as they cause constipation

  • do not take ibuprofen if your piles are bleeding

  • do not spend more time than you need to on the toilet
